        {"id":12224,"date":"2017-07-13T07:08:08","date_gmt":"2017-07-13T07:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ausasteel.irantzu.com\/?p=12224"},"modified":"2017-08-29T14:35:19","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T14:35:19","slug":"steel-and-iso-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ausasteel.com\/en\/steel-and-iso-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Steel and ISO standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>International Organization for Standardization<\/strong><\/a>, known as <strong>ISO<\/strong> was created in 1947 to <strong>promote the development of international standards and specifications<\/strong> on the manufacture of all products (ISO means <strong>equal <\/strong>in Greek), with the exception of those belonging to the electrical and electronic branch (under the guidelines of the <strong>IEC<\/strong>, acronym of its name in English <strong><em>I<\/em><\/strong><em>nternational <strong>E<\/strong>lectrotechnical <strong>C<\/strong>ommission<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ISO is formed by a network of institutions in 161 countries (in 2017), with central headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ISO standards cover different aspects of production and trade, such as those governing competition requirements in testing and calibration laboratories, quality management systems and information security systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The adoption of ISO standards is voluntary<\/strong> but they are so widespread that they practically cover every aspect of our daily life, thus protecting the consumer and user of products and services.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Why does the need of developing ISO standards arise? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Historically each country created its own standards to regulate and standardize the qualities and delivery conditions of products. The definition of the standards begins with some letters that specify the origin of their creation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As far as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ausasteel.com\/en\/glossary\/steel\/\" target=\"_blank\">steel<\/a> is concerned, some standards and the origin of the acronym are listed below:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>UNE<\/strong> (<strong><em>U<\/em><\/strong><em>na <strong>N<\/strong>orma <strong>E<\/strong>spa\u00f1ola<\/em>) in Spain<\/li>\n<li><strong>UNI <\/strong>(<em>Ente <strong>N<\/strong>azionale <strong>I<\/strong>taliano di <strong>U<\/strong>nificazione<\/em>) in Italy<\/li>\n<li><strong>DIN<\/strong> (<strong><em>D<\/em><\/strong><em>eutsches <strong>I<\/strong>nstitut F\u00fcr <strong>N<\/strong>ormung<\/em>) in Germany<\/li>\n<li><strong>ASTM<\/strong> (<strong><em>A<\/em><\/strong><em>merican <strong>S<\/strong>ociety for <strong>T<\/strong>esting and <strong>M<\/strong>aterials<\/em>) in America<\/li>\n<li><strong>AISI<\/strong> (<strong><em>A<\/em><\/strong><em>merican <strong>I<\/strong>ron and <strong>S<\/strong>teel <strong>I<\/strong>nstitute<\/em>) in America<\/li>\n<li><strong>SAE<\/strong> (<strong><em>S<\/em><\/strong><em>ociety of <strong>A<\/strong>utomotive <strong>E<\/strong>ngineers<\/em>) in America.<\/li>\n<li><strong>JIS<\/strong> (<strong><em>J<\/em><\/strong><em>apanese <strong>I<\/strong>ndustrial <strong>S<\/strong>tandards<\/em>) in Japan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In order to ease the free movement of materials<\/strong> within the European Community, <strong>CEN<\/strong> (abbreviation in Spanish of <strong>C<\/strong>omit\u00e9 <strong>E<\/strong>uropeo de <strong>N<\/strong>ormalizaci\u00f3n \u2013 European Committee for Standardization) decided to establish <strong>EN standards <\/strong>in order to <strong>unify the standardization criteria<\/strong>, as a substitute for existing standards in each country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The EN standards are voluntary <\/strong>(unless a legal provision sets a mandatory compliance) and constitute evidence of <strong>presumption<\/strong> <strong>of conformity of products <\/strong>with respect to the essential requirements of these directives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>ISO<\/strong> goes a step further and <strong>develops international standards<\/strong> of voluntary compliance <strong>to coordinate the national standards of each country <\/strong>to facilitate trade, exchange of information and contribute with common standards for the development and transfer of technology.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ausasteel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/GRAF-EN.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-6bRnjpxb\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ausasteel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/GRAF-EN.jpg\" alt=\"GRAF-EN\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ausasteel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/GRAF-EN.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.ausasteel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/GRAF-EN-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>ISO standards on Steel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Steel is considered to be one of the most widely used materials worldwide. Its impact on industry, construction and economy makes that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">almost all countries<\/span> have established standards aimed to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ensure the quality of products related to Steel<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The International Organization for Standardization develops <strong>ISO standards in order to guarantee the quality of steels, <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">regardless the country of origin or the country of destination<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As an example, ISO divides the metal materials into 6 different groups. Each group has its own unique properties according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ausasteel.com\/en\/glossary\/machinability\/\" target=\"_blank\">machinability<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ausasteel.com\/en\/glossary\/steel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steel<\/a> is included in group \u201c<strong>P<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are ISO standards for specific materials and applications.
